Chicago's Carpet Cleaning Group Says March Is the Month to Deal with What Winter Left in Carpets

CHICAGO, IL - Nobody really thinks about what's happening inside their carpet in January. They're just trying to get through the cold. But by March, after five straight months of boots dragging in road salt, wet slush, and whatever else was on the sidewalk - the carpet has been quietly absorbing all of it. And a vacuum isn't going to fix that.

Carpet Cleaning Group, a family-owned company based out of 3652 N Milwaukee Ave on the Northwest Side, is seeing what they see every year around this time: a big jump in calls from homeowners who've noticed their carpets look darker near the front door, smell a little off, or just feel matted down in the hallways.

"It happens the same way every spring," said Vytas Macius, the owner. "Someone pulls back a rug or moves a piece of furniture and goes, 'oh.' That contrast - between the protected carpet and the part that's been walked on all winter - really opens your eyes. We had a guy in Logan Square last year who thought his carpet was gray. It was actually beige. Five months of Chicago winter did that."

Here's the part most people don't realize: rock salt is hygroscopic. It holds moisture. So even after the salt dries on the surface, it's pulling dampness into the carpet fibers and the padding underneath. That creates conditions for mildew and odor, even in a well-heated home. And a regular vacuum only reaches the top of the pile. The grit, the salt residue, the allergens - that stuff sits deeper.

The Carpet and Rug Institute says most homes should get a professional deep carpet cleaning every 12 to 18 months. But for Chicago? Twice a year makes more sense. Once in spring, once in fall. The spring clean is the bigger one - that's the reset after winter.

Carpet Cleaning Group uses truck-mounted hot water extraction for their professional carpet cleaning Chicago jobs. The heat and suction pull out what's embedded in the padding, not just what's sitting on top. They use non-toxic products on every job - safe for kids, pets, all of it.

"We're busiest from mid-March through May," Macius added. "Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wicker Park, Bucktown - we're all over the city. Suburbs too. People just know it's time."

The company is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They offer complimentary estimates over the phone.
